A recent CPD seminar held jointly by FDS Consult UK and Fire Design Solutions, has highlighted the importance for construction professionals to understand new fire safety standard BS9991. Whilst the presentations broadly covered fire engineering principles and smoke venting for projects within the residential, commercial and mixed-use sectors, the feedback obtained post-event from attendees indicated that they are looking for more guidance regarding BS9991 and its impact. Leading the seminar was FDS Consult UK managing director, Michel Wizenberg: “We cover a lot of ground during our seminars, including legislative issues, so attendees can gain thorough insight into fire engineering – of note from this recent seminar was the demand for information regarding BS9991 – professionals understand how essential it is to be aware of the implications the revised standard will have and through our seminar programme we hope to address this.” The CPD focused on using illustrated examples of projects to demonstrate to delegates not only how to comply with regulations and achieve fire approvals, but also how to allow for extended travel distances via smoke venting design to achieve substantial cost savings. As one of the delegates commented: “Most interesting was the presentation of travel distances under different scenarios and the cost comparison.” FDS Consult UK are planning a series of CPD events for 2012, please contact Helen Jeffery on 01322 387411 for more information. 14.06.2012
